Question
4 A heat exchanger is used to transfer heat from one matter to another. Using right material and design is crtical for its heat-exchanging efficiency. It often uses Al or Cu, black surface, and multsi-layer structure. The following are two typical examples. A heat exchanger involves ? the three heat transfer modes Please use the three equations: (10 pts) to explain why a heat exchanger uses the material and such a design Please draw a simple sketch ilustrating how the heat flux flows inside a heat exchanger Al fins Mut-layer Al SimsExplanation / Answer
The function of heat exchanger is to exchange maximum heat with the cold fluid. To achieve this, the thermal conductivity of the tube material must be maximum, and low resistance to heat transfer, therefore ,copper and aluminum serves this purpose better. Furthur, its blackened to utilise the maximum heat due to radiation as the blackbody has highest absorptivity and emissivity, hence black coating is used. Multilayering increases the effective surface area for heat exchange, so that maximum heat exchange occurs between the hot and cold fluid.
