A seventy year old woman trips on the stairs and falls. She complains about severe pain in her right hip. At the hospital, her X-ray shows a fracture in her hip. Her radiology report shows that she has osteoporosis. This is a condition affecting primarily women. Why? What can a woman do to prevent osteoporosis? Explain the role of calcitonin in preventing further bone resorption. Which bone (and part) in the hip joint most often fractures?

Explanation / Answer

15) At dustal end the lateral and medial condyles of the femur articulates with lower leg and patella of tibia.

16)The proximal end of fibula articulates with the inferior aspect of the lateral tibial condyle, forming the proximal tibiofibular joint.

19) Greater tubercle- Humerus

Styloid process- bone near the ear

Radial tuberosity- biceps brachii

Olecrannon fossa- humerus

Spine- spinal colon

Medial malleolus- ankle

Lesser trochanter- femur

Obturator foramen- hip bone

Patellar surface- lower end of femur

Intercondylar fossa- femur

Trochlea- humerus

Osteoporosis is not a condition which occurs only in women. It is more common in older adults but yeah especially women.

The inside of a healthy bone has small spaces, like a honeycomb. Osteoporosis increases the size of these spaces, causing the bone to lose strength and density. In addition, the outside of the bone grows weaker and thinner.

Prevention for osteoporosis:

1) Eatting plenty of calcium and vitamin D

2) Doing weight-bearing exercises

3) Stopping smoking
4) For women, weighing the pros and cons of hormone therapy.

Most people break their hip near the upper part of the thighbone (femur). It usually happens near where the thighbone fits into the hip joint.
