Question

A MODEL FOR CIRCuITS EM HW-93 4. Consider the five networks shown at right. a. Rank the networks according to their equivalent resistance. (Hint: Imagine placing each network in series with an indicator balb and a battery) How does adding a single bulb to a circuit in series with another bulb or network affect the resistance of the circuit? b. How does adding a single bulb to a cireuit in parallel with another bulb or network affect the resistance of the circuit? c. d. The networks A-B above are connected, in turn to identical batteries as shown. Use the model we have developed to: rank the circuits according to equivalent resistance. Explain vi rank the circuits according to the current through the battery. Explain. Tutorials in Introductory Physics McDermott, Shaffer,& P.E.G, U.Wash OPrentice Hall, Inc. First Edition, 2002

Explanation / Answer

A.

Max resistance --------------------->>>>>> least resistance

E> B> A> C >D

-------

B.in series we need to add the resistance hence it gives higher value of resistance compared to the individual resistors.

------

C. In parallel circuits, the equivalent resiatance always comes less than the smaller resistance among the two. We get least value of resistance in parallel circuit.

------

Consider all the resistors are identical

Max equivalent resistance--------------------- >>>> least equivalent resistance

(iii) =(v)> (vi)> (i)=(ii)> (iv)

The circuit having least equivalent resistance has max current

So the order reversed now

(iv)> (ii)=(i)> (vi)>(v)> (iii)
