Question

Use the iron-iron carbide phase diagram to answer the following questions.

Consider a 1.0 wt% Carbon alloy

a.  Is it hypo or hyper eutectoid?

b. At room temperature, what fraction is ferrite and what fraction is cementite?

c.  Is the proeutectoid phase ferrite or cementite?

d.  At room temperature, what fraction is eutectoid microconstituent, and what fraction is proeutectoid?

The iron-iron carbide phase diagram (Adapted from binary alloy phase diagrams 2nd edition. Vol I.T.B. Masalki, Editor in - cheaf, 1990 repeated by permission of ASM international, Meteerial park, OH.)

Explanation / Answer

a)It is hypereutectoid because concentration of carbon is 1wt% which is higher than that of eutectoid concentration (0.76%).

b)fraction of ferrite = (6.7-1)/(6.7-0.008) (at room temperature)

= 0.85

fraction of cementite = 1- fraction of feerite = 0.15.

ferrite - 0.85 cementite - 0.15

c)proeutectoid phase is cementite

d)eutectoid fraction = (6.7-1)/(6.7-0.76)

= 0.96

proeutectoid fraction = 1- eutectoid fraction = 0.04

eutectoid - 0.96 proeutectoid - 0.04
