Question
A flat sheet is glued to plate A and is being pulled with force P resulting in a
shear strain, y, in plate A of 0.001 radians. If the plate is made of aluminum
and has a volume of 100 0cm3,
a). Find the shear stress in plate A.
b). Find the magnitude of P.
Explanation / Answer
a) for aluminium, Modulus of Rigidity, G = 24*10^9 N/m2 strain produced = 0.001 rad shear stress/shear strain = G shear stress = G*shear strain = 24*10^9 * 0.001 = 2.4*10^7 N/m2 b) volume given = 1000 cm3 thickness of plate A as shown in figure = 10cm therefore the area on which P is acting, Area=volume/thickness=1000/10 = 100cm2 = 0.01m2 shear stress = force /area therefore fore P = shear stress * area = 2.4*10^7 * 0.01 = 2.4*10^5 N magnitude of P = 2.4*10^5 N
