Question
4. Two particles of mass m1=m and m2=2m are connected by an inextensible string and
move on a frictionless horizontal plane such that the string is always in tension (much
like the figure shown for problem #2). Initially the particles are rotating about one
another such that the string has an angular speed ?0 and length L0. A mechanism in m1
then reels in the string so that the new length is L0/2, which is then held constant.
Determine for the new configuration: (a) the angular speed and (b) the tension of the
string.
Explanation / Answer
apllying conservation of angu,ar momentum we have
m*w0*L0^2+2*m*w0^2*L0^2=m*w*L0^2/4+2*m*w*L0^2
w=4/3w0 ans
b.) Tension In the Spring
m*(w)^2*L0/2
=16/6*m*w0^2*L0
=8/3*m*w0^2*L0
