Question
A gas is contained in a vertical, frictionless, pixton-cylinder. The piston (m= 10 kg, A- 7.5 X 10^-3 m^2) is attached to a spring, and the back-side of the piston is exposed to atmospheric pressure. Initially the piston is at x= 0 m, and the spring is not deformed. Thereafter the gage pressure in the cylinder is increased to 0.75 bar, until the final volume of the gas increases by 3.75 x 10^-3 m^3. The local acceleration of gravity is 9.81 m/s^2. Determine the following: i) The initial cylinder gage pressure (kPa) ii) The linear spring constant k (N/m)Explanation / Answer
Take the mass of the piston, convert it to weight using value of g=9.8 N/kg. Add the spring force onto this weight. Take your sum and divide by x-sect area. This converts force to pressure. You now know the gage pressure. Additionally, add the background pressure, and there's your answer.
