Question

For your Project 1 Table, report the following data in appropriate data presentation format: Measurements that document any taper in the specimen. Measurements that document roundness of specimen throughout length Measurements that document the overall gage length of the specimen Description of the surface finish of the specimen Along with this table submission, you must specify whether or not your specimen dimensions met requirements of the ASTM Standard E8 with a short explanation of why it did or did not meet E8 specifications. The part(specimen) we worked on initially The final part after machining is done: I need guidance in the following things: What does document any taper in the specimen mean? What do I need to measure exactly? The second one do I just measure the larger diameter and smaller one and that's it? What is the overall gage length of this specimen? and how do I measure it? Maybe a couple tips on how to describe the surface finish Also I need help on how to specify whether or not the specimen dimensions met requirements of the ATSM standard E8, please help on that too!

Explanation / Answer

1)Tapering in any specimen is done by a tapering tool.It is done by several methods by Compound slide,Taper turning arrangement, Offsetting of a tailstock or by a CNC machine.

2)The diameter must be measured at every region because it is compulsory for Taper turning to have a uniform reduction in the diameter.

3)Gauge length is five times the diameter and it can be measured easily by Vernier calliper.

4)Surface finish depends on the material. It can be done nicely by using Emerypaper.
