Question

Briefly state what the followings express: a. 1^st Law of Thermodynamics b. A quasi-equilibrium process c. State postulate Process is defined as changes that a system undergoes from one equilibrium state to another. a. Define isothermal and isobaric processes. b. Following figure shows a cycle called Carrot cycle. In this cycle, find and mark isothermal processes. A System is a quantity of matter or a region in space chosen for study. We have two types of systems Please indicate what type of system is shown in each figure and state your reason.

Explanation / Answer

a) 1st Law of thermodynamics: the first law states the general principle of the conservation of energy.

Energy is neither created nor destroyed, but only gets transformed from one form to another.

b) Quasi meaning almost.Infinite slowness is the characteristic feature of a quasi equilibrium process.A quasi equilibrium process is also called a reversible process. The gas in the cylinder be a system, since the pressure is at all times a thermodynamic coordinate all the states passed through by the system as volume changes from V1 to V2 must be in quilibrium states and the path must be quasi equilibrium.

c) State postulate defines the given number of properties to a thermodynamic system in a state of equilibrium. The state postulate allows a finite number of properties to be specified in order to fully describe a state of thermodynamic equilibrium.

2.a) Isothermal process:In a process system will undergo changes from state 1 to 2 but temperature will be constant throughout the process. State 1 & 2 temperature are same.

Isobaric process: In a process system will undergo changes from state 1 to 2 but pressure will be constant throughout the process. State 1 & 2 pressure are same.

2.b) As per figure 3 to 4 process temperature is constant 20 DegC and 1 to 2 process temperature is constant -8 DegC . These two process are isothermal process.

3. a) The system quantitity of matter because steam quantity is defined & heat is going out.steam quantity is costant.

b) The system region in space chosen for study because air is going out so quantity is variable.
