Question

a.) Describe mathematically and explain the Principle of Linear Impulse and Momentum ? What is Conservation of Linear Momentum and how is it related?

b.) Describe mathematically and explain the Principle of Angular Impulse and Momentum ? What is Conservation of Angular Momentum and how is it related?

c.) What is the difference between Linear Momentum and Angular Momentum?

Explanation / Answer

a). As per newton's second law of motion in translational mechanics, net external force applied on a body is directly proportional to its rate of change of linear momentum. i.e., F = (dp/dt) => F.dt = dp => net external impulse = change in linear momentum. Conservation of linear momentum In the absence of any external forces, the total linear momentum of a system is conserved. => dp/dt = 0 => p = constant b). As per newton's second law of motion in rotational mechanics, net external torque applied on a body is directly proportional to its rate of change of angular momentum. i.e., T = (dL/dt) => T.dt = dL => net external angular impulse = change in angular momentum. Conservation of angular momentum In the absence of any external torques, the total angular momentum of a system is conserved. => dL/dt = 0 => L = constant c). Angular momentum is the rotational analogue of linear momentum and it is obtained by multiplying the linear momentum by the lever arm.
