Question
Soil A comes to the lab either from test pit or borehole investigation. T1K person that took the sample has visually described the soil (without any lab testing) as a "sandy clay". In reality, he is unsure. He therefore requests the lab to perform a mechanical sieve analysis and Afterberg Limit test on the sample. The results come back from the lab: 5% gravel. 15% sand, and S0% passing the 0.075 mm size sieve (this is equivalent to the No. 200 sieve). The fine fraction of the soil has a plastic limit of 20 and a liquid limit of -40. Classify the soil?Explanation / Answer
Using Unified Soil Classification System (Plasticity Chart): Since 80%>50% passes No.200 sieve, the soil is considered fine grained. Using the plasticity chart and the PI=20 and LL=40 we find the soil is CL or Low Plasticity Clay.
