Question

You discover a new organism, but not know much about what this organism does. You notice that a portion of it is structurally similar to a human heart. Briefly explain how this observation may help you something about the function of the organism Fill in the blanks with the term(s) that identifies the appropriate level of organization. A is composed of similar cells that perform a discrete function, whereas an is composed of interconnected organs that perform integrated body functions. Which of the following statements accurately describes homeostasis? Select all that apply. The loss of homeostasis can lead to illness, but not death. The internal state of the body is impacted by external and internal changes to which it must respond (compensate) in order to counteract the change and preserve stability. The internal state of the body is best described as a static equilibrium, in which a variable is maintained at a constant set point. The body has the ability to detect change, activate mechanisms that oppose the change, and maintain a relatively stable internal environment. The body can use positive feedback control or negative feedback control to alter the current state of regulated variables. Explain (identify which and tell why) which one is more likely to be used to maintain homeostasis. A drawing may help you explain.

Explanation / Answer

2.Tissue ; organ system

3. Answers B and D.

Homeostasis maintains a stable internal system in spite of the external and internal changes, while responding to the changes. At the same time, the body does detect changes in the environment and acts accordingly to maintain homeostasis.

Negative feedback strives to maintain the normal status of a particular condition in the body. Homeostasis is generally maintained by negative feedback. Negative feedbacks can either increase or decrease a stimulus within the body.

E.g. maintenance of blood glucose levels in body.

When the blood glucose level in an organism falls, the fall in the blood glucose level is detected. This causes the alpha cells of the pancreas to secrete glucagon. On the release of glucagon, the liver breaks down the glycogen present in it and releases glucose leading to increase in the blood glucose level and maintenance of blood glucose level.
