Mitochondrial inheritence is maternal inheritance, that is, mitochondria are inherited from mother only. During fertilization of egg, only the nucleus of the male gamete fuses with the female gamete whereas the cytoplasm of the egg and its organelle are retained. Therefore, after fertilization, the zygote has its mitochondria derived from the egg, but not from the sperm. Therefore, only the maternal genotype is expressed in case of mitochondria.
