Question

(P) Dingo (H) (P) Red Fox Feral Cat Fire Large Kangaroo /Emu (3) (2) (H,P) (3) Rain Mouse/Reptile Bird Grass/Herb Biomass Invertebrate Soil Quality 5) Based upon the above food web (H herbivore, P predator) from the Australian outback (hot, dry, desert climate), answer the following questions... however, was A) Historically, an extinct marsupial the TASMANIAN woLF, was the top predator in the Outback, it were replaced by the D (Canis upus dingo; introduced to Australia 3,500 years ago). However, dingo populations how similarly gr reduced when they were hunted/poisoned by sheep farmers. Assuming dingos were not present, did this entire food web respond to the loss of the Tasmanian wolves and dingos as top predators? Why?

Explanation / Answer

Due to the geographical isolation of Australia, it had experienced the absence of top predators which would be rather present in the mainland of other continent like Tiger, Lion etc. but this place was actually filled by Tasmanian Wolf. Tasmanian wolf became extinct and led to the absence of top or apex predator. This void was filled by Dingo, as it clearly explains in the above diagram.

A) Situation: absence of top predator.

When the top predator is absent it will lead to a condition were the hebivores growth or population will drastically increase as there is no apex predator, thus in brief: absence of top predator will lead to a huge increase in the number of herbivores, in this case kangaroos etc.

And also as the herbivores population has increased, then it leads to high feeding of vegetation by herbivores which leads to less primary consumers: i:e: plants, grass. etc.

Which affects whole makeup of food web.

B)With Dingos recovery: we will have a mechanism to check the over growth of herbivores, which will maintain the ecological balance.
