Question
Three point charges are placed at the vertices of an equilateral triangle with sides of length L.A) each charge is qual to q. Find the points in space at which the field intensity is zero.
B) two charges are qual to q the third to 2q. show that the electric field intensity is zero only at infinity.
solutions:
for A I got. By symmetry, at the center of the triangle the E field intensity is zero because the unit charge P will be repelled equally by the 3 forces. but the book has the answer: 0.289L or 0.125L from the sides of the triangle.
I could not solve B.
Explanation / Answer
A)you are correct.it will be the point at the centre of the triangle.the book is also correct as this point will be 0.289L from the sides of the triangle,
bcoz distance of the centre of the triangle from sides=(1/3)x(3/2)xL=0.289L
B)in this case there will be no point possible where electric field =0.so at infinity distance tends to infinity.
electric field will be 0 for all the charges making a total of electric field 0.
