C11 Problem 11.33 - Enhanced - with Feedback Part A Problem 11.33 - Enhanced with Feedback What is the speed of the resulting 85 g ball of clay? Express your answer with the appropriate units A 20 g ball of clay traveling east at 6.5 m/s collides with a 65 g ball of clay traveling north at 2.0 m/s You may want to review ( page 280) 2.5 Submit My Answers Give Up Incorrect; Try Again Part B What is the direction of the resulting ball of clay? 45 o north of east Submit My Answers Give Up Correct Here we learn how to find the direction of the body after an inelastic collision.

Explanation / Answer

An inelastic collsion:

m1v1 + m2v2 = V(m1 + m2) [momentum is conserved]

East-West component:
(20 g)(6.5 m/s) + (65 g)(0 m/s) = V1(85 g)
V1 = 13 g*m/s / 85 g
V1 = 1.5294 m/s

North-south component:
(20 g)(0 m/s) + (65 g)(2m/s) = V2(85 g)
V2 = 1.5294 m/s

By Pythagorean's Theorem:
V = sqrt(V12 + V22)
V = 2.163 m/s
V = 2.16 m/s

tan x = (1.5294 m/s) / (1.5294 m/s)
x = arctan(1)
x = 45 degrees
