Question
Use the exact values you enter in previous answer(s) to make later calculation(s).
A baseball player hits a baseball (m = 0.149 kg) as shown in the figure below. The ball is initially traveling horizontally with speed of 36 m/s. The batter hits a fly ball as shown, with a speed vf = 45 m/s.
(a) What are the magnitude and direction of the impulse imparted to the ball?
(b) If the ball and the bat are in contact for a time of 8.0 ms, what is the magnitude of the average force of the bat on the ball?
____________ N
Compare this answer to the weight of the ball.
= ]
(c) What is the impulse imparted to the bat?
Explanation / Answer
a)Initial velocity in x-diection=Vix=-36 m/sec
Final velocity in x-direction=Vfx=45 cos 45 m/sec
Initial velocity in y-direction=Vyi=0
Final velocity in y-direction=Vyf= 45 sin 45 m/sec
We know impulse is change in momentum.so,
Impulsex =m(Vfx-Vix)=0.149(31.82+36)=10.11 kg m/s
Impulsey =m(Vfy-Viy)=0.149(31.82-0)=4.74 kg m/s
Impulse=sqrt{Ix^2 +Iy^2}=11.17 kg m/s
Direction=arctan(Iy/Ix)=25 degree
b)Favg=Impulse/t=11.17/8*10^{-3} =1.4 kN
Favg/mg =1.4k/.149*9.8 =958.8
c)The impulse that the ball imparts to the bat is equal and opposite to the impulse the bat imparts to the ball. (This is from Newton's 3rd law.)
Manitude=10.17 kg m/s
Direction=180+25=205 degree
