Question
A trajectory of a green ball on a coordinate system is shown:
1. Write down equations to describe the horizontal and vertical velocity components of the ball as a function of time. Sketch a graph to represent each equation.
(Do you think the horizontal component of the object's velocity changes during its flight? If so, how does it change? Or do you think it is constant (does not change)? Explain your reasoning. What about the vertical component of its velocity?)
2. Write down the equations that describe the horizontal and vertical position of the ball as a function of time. Sketch a graph to represent each equation.
Thank you!
Explanation / Answer
1.For horizontal component of the velocity, Vx = Vox = x/t For the vertical component of the velocity Vy, Vy = Voy – gt
The horizontal component of the velocity always remains constant in this type of motion as the gravity is the only force which acts on the object causing the change in the vertical component of the velocity.
Since, horizontal component of the velocity remains constant throughout the motion, the graph will be a parallel line to the time axis.
While Vy = Voy – gt represents a straight line of nature y = mx, where m = g here, and x = t
2. For x = Vox*t represents a straight line having Vox = slope = constant,
y = Voy*t - 1/2gt² represents a parabola.
