The scaffold weighs 194 N and is 2.9 m long. What is the tension in each rope when the 692-N worker stands 1.04 m from one end? smaller tension Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. Double check your calculations. Explanation / Answer

If the scaffold weight is uniformly distributed, each rope will support one half of the weight.
Left reaction = 97 N
Right reaction = 97 N

The 692 N worker is standing closer to one end (assume left). Sum moments about the left end = 0
1.04m * 692 N - 2.9 m * Right reaction = 0
Right reaction = 719.68 / 2.9 = 248.16 N

Sum forces in Vertical direction = 0
Left reaction = 692 - 248.16 = 443.83 N

Sum all forces
Left reaction = 97 N + 443.83 N = 540.83 N larger tension force
Right reaction = 97 N + 248.16 N = 345.16 N smaller tension force
