Question

The three objects in the drawing are connected by strings that pass over massless and friction-free pulleys. The objects move, and the coefficient of kinetic friction between the middle object and the surface of the table is 0.100. (Assume

m1 = 11.1 kg

and

m2 = 27.5 kg.)

The three objects in the drawing are connected by strings that pass over massless and friction-free pulleys. The objects move, and the coefficient of kinetic frictian between the middle object and the surface of the table is 0.100. (Assume m1= 11.1 kg and m2 = 27.5 kg.) 80.0 kg m, m2 (a) What is the acceleration of the three objects? (b) Find the tension in each of the two strings. Ti (left) T2 (right)

Explanation / Answer

m2g-T2=m2a

Or, 27.5*9.8 - T2=27.5a

Or , 269.6-T2=27.5a...(i)

T2-T1-0.1*80*9.8=80a

Or, T2-T1-78.4=80a...(ii)

T1-m1g=m1a

T1-108.78=11.1a...(iii)

Solving the three equations we get

a=0.695 m/s2

T1 = 116.49 N

T2=250.49 N
