Question

2 Main Question Consider a block (which may or may not be moving) on a slope experiencing three forces as shown on the diagram. The slope is at an angle of a- 21° above the horizontal. The three forces are F, F and F (with corresponding magnitudes Fi-150lbs., F-140lbs., and Fs 75 Ibs. shown in the figure) a) Which force is gravity, which is the normal, and what could the other force be? b) In the usual coordinates (x horizontal, y vertical), determine the net force in the r-direction. Fretz = net. c) In the usual coordinates, determine the net force in the y-direction. Fret.y = d) What is the magnitude and direction of the net force? (Hint: check to make sure this makes sense) Direction:- net

Explanation / Answer

a) F1 is gravity acting downwards

F2 is normal reaction acting perpendicular to incline

F3 can be force due to static friction or kinetic friction depending upon object is stationery or moving respectively).

b) Net force in horizontal direction

Fx = F3cos21 -F2sin21 =75cos21-140sin21 = 19.84 lbs

c) Net force in vertical direction

Fy=F1-F3sin21 -F2cos21=150-140sin21-75cos21 =29.8 lbs

d) Force F2 will balance F1cos21

Force along the incline = F1sin21-F3 =150sin21-75= -21.24 lbs

Hence Net force acting on the block will be of magnitude 21.24 lbs acting upward along the incline.
