Question: A bullet of mass 0.010 kg, moving horizontally, strikes a stationary block of wood of mass 1.5 kg that is suspended as a pendulum. The bullet lodges in the wood, and together they swing upward a vertical distance of 0.40 m. a) For the block/bullet combination, calculate: i. the potential energy change at maximum height; ii. the velocity and the momentum just after the collision. b) Determine the velocity and the kinetic energy of the bullet before the collision c) How much energy is dissipated as heat during the collision? 0010kg d) If it takes a time of 5.0 ms for the bullet to imbed in the wood, what is the average force that the bullet exerts on the block? 4 MA Math/algebra errorCalculation error UN Wrong units CL

Explanation / Answer

a) potential energy change = Mgh = (1.5+0.01) * 9.8 * 0.4 = 5.92 J
Velocty just after the collision = (2 g h)1/2 = ( 2* 9.8* 0.4)1/2 = 2.8 m/s
Momentum just after the collision = M V = (1.5+0.01) *2.8 = 4.23 kg m/s

b)Momentum of bullet, just before the collision = Moemtum of Bullet + block just after the collision = 4.23
Hence 4.23 =Mb * Vb = 0.01*Vb
Vb = 423 m/s
Kinetic energy of bullet = 1/2 Mb vb2 = 1/2 (0.01) (423)2 = 894.6 J

c) Energy dissipated as heat = kinetic energy of bullet - increase in potential energy = 894.6 - 5.92 = 888.7 J

d) Momentum of block = mass of block * (speed of block +bullet after the collision) = 1.5 *2.8 = 4.2
Force on block = change in momentum of block / time = 4.2 / 0.005 = 840 N
