Question
PLease explain and give answer
A compound that contains only carbon and hydrogen is commercially used as a fruit-ripening agent. A sample of this compound is burned in a combustion analysis apparatus and 3.14 g of CO2 and 1.29 g of H2O are produced. What is the empirical formula of the compound? If the molar mass of the compound is 28 g/mol, what is the molecular formula?
CXHY + O2 ----------------> CO2 + H2O
(Hint: It is not balanced. You cannot balance it until you find out the numerical values of X and Y)
Empirical Formula and molecular formula
Explanation / Answer
No of moles of CO2 = 3.14/44 = 0.0714 mole.
so that no of moles of C in sample = 0.0714 mole
No of moles of H2O = 1.29/18 = 0.0717 mole.
no of moles of H in sample = 2*0.0717 = 0.1434 mole.
simplest ration oe elements
0.0714/0.0714 = 1
0.1434/0.0714 = 2.0084
empirical formula = CH2
Molarmass = 28 g/mol , empirical mass = 14 g/mol
n = 28/24 = 2
molecular formla = 2*CH2 = C2H4
C2H4 + + 3O2 ----------------> 2CO2 + 2H2O
