3. A box is being dragged around on a flat surface by two ropes. A motion diagram of the box is shown in Figure 1. The motion diagram shows a view looking down on the box and the surface from above. One rope can only pull in the positive x-direction and the other can only pull in the negative y-direction. The friction between the box and the surface cannot be neglected. When drawing free body diagrams of the box use a top view. There will always be a gravitational force pointing down into the page and a normal force pointing up out of the page. However, since these never change, cancel each other out and never affect the motion of the box we are not interested in them. So do not include them on your free body diagrams. Don’t forget to accompany all free body diagrams with indications of the net force.
