Question
2. During a running gait pattern, a number of people leave the ground with their center of mass at a different height from the ground than when they land. Please explain how this is possible. Your answer should include some conversation about how they leave the ground and how they contact the ground.
3. When calculating the projectile motion equations from the situation in question 2, what can you say about the initial vertical velocity (moment they became a projectile) and the final vertical velocity (moment prior to the runner contacting the ground)?
Explanation / Answer
When the person leaves the ground , she is in a crouchin position to get a higher 'lift' . In crouching position the CM will be lower. While landing the the person is more erect as compared to the start. Hence CM is littel higher.
The initial vertical velocity will be equal to the final vertical velocity if we neglect friction with the air.)
