Question
Practice with RC Circuits R Imagine the circuit at right starts out with an open switch and no charge on the capacitor. The switch is then closed. Find the following: a) The current and voltage in each resistor just after the switch closes. V b) The current and voltage in each resistor and the 0 charge on the capacitor after a long time. c) Make a sketch (graph) of current and voltage as a function of time for R2 and R1. R2 ou2 R1 Assume that the voltage on the battery is V = 50V and R1-200Q, R2=100 and C-25Explanation / Answer
a] Equivalent resistance of the two resistors will be:
R = [(1/200) + (1/100)]-1 = 66.667 ohms
so, current in R1 at t = 0 will be: i = V/R1 = 50/200 = 0.25 A and current in R2 at t = 0s will be: i' = 50/100 = 0.5 A.
voltage across R1 and R2 at t = 0s will be: V = 50 volts.
c] After the long time, current in the capacitor branch will almost be zero and so current through R2 = 0 A. Voltage across it will be 0 V.
current through R1 = 50/200 = 0.25 A and voltage across it = 50 volts.
