Question

True or False. Explain your answer for each statement.

1. A female mouse is heterozygous for the agouti gene, which results in a coat color of orange. She is mated to an agouti male. After being fed a diet high in onions and garlic, all of her offspring display the recessive solid brown fur color. Mutation of the agouti gene is the most likely explanation of this observed result.

2. If a cell experienced nutrient deficiency for phosphorus, the rate of mRNA production would be decreased.

3. The spliceosome is a eukaryotic protein and RNA complex in the nucleus that modifies mRNAs before they are exported to the cytosol.

Explanation / Answer

1. TRUE

Since the female mouse is heterozygous it contains atleast one dominant allele for agouti gene, so atleast one of the offspring should result in a coat color of orange. As they say all the offsprings resulted in a recessive brown color, it may be because of a mutation in agouti gene.

2.TRUE

Phosphorus is very essential for life. It is present in the form of inorganic phosphates, in almost all the organisms. It also forms a backbone in RNA. RNA contains almost 0.091g of phosphorus in per gram of its ry weight. Therefore, if a cell experiences phosphorus deficiency, then there is phosphate deficiency too, there by RNA production also decreases.

3. TRUE

Spliceosome is present in nucleus of eukaryotic cells. It is a complex formed from snRNA and proten complex. It removes introns from pre-mRNA by a process called splicing.
