Question

You find in Marshak a new type of animal that looks different. You catch two of these animals to start a colony. You now find other ones covered with dimples running around Marshak. You do the crosses below; WT = wild type, the F2 progeny are the result of mating the F1 progeny. Descibe the inheritance pattern for these traits. (modified from a previous exam) There are four traits (rolling, squat, curly, and abnormal tail). The following crosses were performed: Cross 1: squat, rolling femal x curly, abnormal tail male F1 progeny: wild type Cross 2: FI progeny x FI progeny F2 progeny (3200 total): 790 wild type 200 abnormal tail, curly 580 rolling 380 curly 620 abnormal tail 10 rolling, abnormal tail 420 squat 2OOlling, squat What are the inheritance patterns for the traits? Be as specific as possible. What are the map distances between relevant traits?

Explanation / Answer

1. Mitochondrial inheritance:- Mitochondria are found in the cytoplasm of animal and plant cells, and their DNA replication takes place through the process of mitochondrial division. A mother transfers all its mitochondria through the egg cell in to the newly formed embryo, so mitochondrial inheritance is through the maternal line. In F1 generation all the progeny are wild type, and receives all its genes from mother. This is also known as maternal inheritence.
