The subject sees the ball at 0 degree (i.e., 90 degree from the center of the field of vision), but cannot distinguish the color until 450 degree. Explain these results using you know about rods and cones.

Explanation / Answer

Cones are concentrated in the central part of retina (fovea), which is nearly devoid of rods. The number of cones decreases sharply outwards from the centre, which is why color perception also decreases with eccentricity from the direct line of sight. At the periphery of the retina, cones are almost absent and only rods are present. This accounts for the inability of the person to distinguish the color until the ball comes within 45 degrees of the line of sight.
