Question

1) Michael jordan is standing at the top of the three-point line preparing for a jump shot at the buzzer.

This shot will win the game. being such an expert basketball player, he knows when he shoots the ball it will follow a path defined by the following equation

y=- 0.6x2 + 1.45 x + h0

where h0 is the height that the ball is short from all units are in feet

will he have to jump to make the basket? if so, how high?

Karl Malone is attempting to block Michael's shot. he is standing two feet away from Michael and jumps vertically to make the block. how high does karl need to jump to block the shot?

do the bulls win the game?

Provide all work,graphs, and asumptions necessary to demonstrate your results.

2) Find or create a set of data. conduct a regression analysis of this data( using a tool like MS Excel).

your regression model must have 0.5<R2 < 0.9. Provide a plot of your data as well as the equation generated by your regression analysis.

3) write the equation for a function . Re-write this function with a vertical and horizontal shift. plot the original equation and the shifted equation of the same coordinate plane.

4)write the equation for piecewise function with at least one discontinuity state its domain and range.

5) Plot a function. state its domain and range. the upper(and lower) limits of the domaine and range cannot be infinity(or negative infinity)

6)write an equation for a parabola with no x-intercepts. prove this by using the quadratic formula. plot the plot the parabola.

7) write an equation for a parabola with two x-intercepts. prove this by using the quadratic formula. plot the parabola and show the intercepts.

8)write an equation for a parabola with one x-intercepts. prove this by using the quadratic formula. plot the parabola and show the intercepts.

Explanation / Answer

y = -0.6x2 + 1.45x + h0

The three point line distance from basket = 23.75 ft

Height of rim = 10 ft

(10 - h0) = -0.6*(23.75)2 + 1.45*(23.75) + h0

=> h0 = 157 ft

Therefore, Michael jordan needs to jump to 157ft.

y = -0.6*(2)2 + 1.45*2 + 157

=> y = 157.5 ft

Therefore, Karl Malone needs to jump 157.5ft to block the shot
