Question

You drop your laptop; what is its acceleration as it hits the ground?

How did you determine the acceleration?

What equations did you need?

What values did you use for the variables?

How did you determine those values?

How does this acceleration compare to what a human can safely endure without harm?

How does it compare to the acceleration of other objects?

Discuss what would happen (conceptually) if the laptop lands on a corner versus one of the sides. What happens (conceptually) if the laptop is dropped on concrete as opposed to a more forgiving surface?

Please be as detailed as possible! Thanks

Explanation / Answer

(1) When any body falls freely then it has the acceleration equal to the acceleration of gravity
which is a constant value i.e. g = 9.81 m/s2 .
Hence if you drop your laptop to fall free then it will accelerate by the value of 9.81 m/s2 at the time it hits the ground.
(2) Acceleration can be determined by knowing the initial and final velocities of the motion and time period of the motion.
Acceleration is defined as the rate of change of velocity i.e
Acceleration (a) = (Final velocity - Initial velocity )/ time
(3) We have basically three equations of motion including some variables like
u = initial velocity , V = final velocity , a = acceleration . t = time , S = distance
Equation 1
V = u + at ----------(1)
S = ut + (1/2)at2 ------------(2)
V2 = u2 + 2aS -------------(3)
If we have the value of any two variable then we can find the value of third variable by using these equations.
(4) The values which is to be used mentioned in the question.
Foe eg if it is mentioned that motion start from rest that means the initial velocity = 0
Or if it is mentioned that the motion stops finally then the final velocity will be = 0
Similarly values of other variable is also mentioned in the question .
