Question
Does this relate to how the Polaroid camera / photos where invented? Can someone tell me a little more detail or explanation about this? A simple explanation will do. Thanks The most common way of artificially generating polarized visible light is to send FIGURE 31.28 A polarizing filter unpolarized light through a polarizing filter. The first widely used polarizing filter was invented by Edwin Land in 1928, while he was still an undergraduate student He developed an improved version, called Polaroid, in 1938. Polaroid, as shown in FIGURE 31.28, is a plastic sheet containing very long organic molecules known as polymers. The sheets are formed in such a way that the polymers are all aligned to form a grid, rather like the metal bars in a barbecue grill. The sheet is then chemically treated to make the polymer molecules somewhat conducting. Polarizer axis As a light wave travels through Polaroid, the component of the electric field oscillating parallel to the polymer grid drives the conduction electrons up and down the molecules. The electrons absorb energy from the light wave, so the parallel component of E is absorbed in the filter. But the conduction electrons can't oscillate perpendicular to the Unpolarized lightOnly the component of molecules, so the component of E perpendicular to the polymer grid passes through without absorption. Thus the light wave emerging from a polarizing filter is polarizedossible directions perpendicular to the polymer grid. The direction of the transmitted polarization is called the polarizer axis. Polymers consists of waves E parallel to the axisExplanation / Answer
Yes, this was the first step for invention of Polaroid Camera. The earliest Polaroid camera, which consisted of a camera and portable wet darkroom in a single compartment, was invented in 1923 by Samuel Shlafrock. And the first Commercial Polaroid Camera, the model 95 Land Camera was developed in 1948 by Edwin Land.
Polaroid Spectra cameras used Polaroid Spectra film which went back to a rectangular format. It is Used for producing polarized light from unpolarized lightby dichroism, consisting typically of a stretched sheet of colorlessplastic treated with an iodine solution so as to have long, thin, parallelchains of polymeric molecules containing conductive iodine atoms. It isused widely in optical and lighting devices to reduce glare. Also called Polaroid print. a print made by such a camera.
As we move towards Technology, we get to know that It is increasing at an Alarming rate. Similarly,
The New Mechanics:-
Polaroid cameras are loaded with film packs containing sheets of plastic negatives covered in reactive chemicals. When you take a picture, rollers insider the camera remove one negative from the pack and hold it in front of the camera lens. The negative is held in this position for an instant while the shutter opens, exposing the film to incoming light from the lens. After the required exposure time, the camera rollers eject the negative, allowing you to remove the picture.
Hope this helps! :)
