Question

1. Decide whether the following statements are true or false. Place a T on the blank line if the statement is true, and place an F if the statement is false a) In the process called pair production, electromagnetic energy is con verted into matter with the creation of an electron and a positron. This process requires energy of at least mec? b) A photon has a wavelength that is twice of that of a particle, the photon energy is Ey and the particle's total energy is Ep, then Ey Ep c) In a photoelectric effect experiment at a frequency above cut off, the number of electrons ejected is proportional to the frequency of the incident light d) Compton scattering from stationary electrons for which the emitted light has a frequency that is greater than that of the incident light is forbidden. e) A relativistic particle of rest mass m should have a velocity v-c (3/4)12 in order for its momentum to have magnitude p = 2mV.

Explanation / Answer

A) false .. because for a photon to produce electron and positron , the energy of photon must be equal to the rest mass energy of both the particle in order to have conservation of energy and momentum .. since rest mass energy of electron is equal to rest mass energy of positron = mec^2 . Therefore energy of photon must be atleast 2mec^2.

B) true .. because energy is inversely proportional to wavelength .. since wavelegth of photon is large than particle wavelength, therefore energy of photon will be less than particle energy

C) false ... rate at which electrons are emitted after cutoff frequency is directly proportional to intensity of light .

D) true .. because some energy of incident photon is transfered to electron and hence by conservation of energy and momentum the emited photon will have less frequency than the incident .

E) true .. because p = m v /root(1-(v/c)^2 ) if we substitute the value of v =c(3/4)3/2 the momentum p comes out to be 2m v
