ID: 1770130 • Letter: 3

Question

38 A sinusoidal beam of electromagnetic radiation that is only 2 cm high propagates in the +x direction, with the electric field in the z direction. The beam strikes a metal rod that is centered on the origin and aligned along the z axis, as shown in Figure 23.124. You place detectors sensitive to electromagnetic radiation at location 0,-17,0) m (detector A) and location (0,0,17) m (detector B). Answer the following questions for detector A and for detector B: Will the detector detect electromagnetic radiation? If so: (a) What is the direction of propagation of the electromagnetic radiation detected? (b) What is the direction of the electric field in the radiation? (c) What is the direction of the magnetic field in the radiation? Figure 23.124

Explanation / Answer

The beam width is only 2 cm, the radiation field effect is only around 2 cm arond the x-axis as the direction of propogation is along the +ve x-axis.

As the beam strikes the rod which is along the z-axis, electric potentail develops along the length of the rod and the rod acts as dipole.

As the wave strikes the rod , the potential across the rod alternates in direction.

The rod is an oscillation dipole. raidate electomagnetic radiation, direction of the radiation is radial from origin.

Detector A ( (0,-17,0), the detector is on the -y axis.

direction of electromagnetic radiation along -y axis , propogation along -y-axis

direction of electric field is paralle to z-axis , -z

direction of magnetic field is parlle to x-axis. , -x

Detector B(0,0,17(

radiation propogation +z, axis

electric field is -y axis,

magnetic field is = x-axis

note : E X B is direction of propogation of the radiation.
