Question

The table on the next page gives various physical parameters of some of the stars on the Main Sequence of the Hertzsprung-Russel (HR) Diagram. (a) Make a plot of the radius versus the mass of these stars on a “log –log” plot (log in base 10 please) with mass on the x-axis. (b) On the plot in (a) draw the line that would correspond to the mass-radius relationship if all of the stars were the same density as the Sun. Draw another line corresponding to a density one-tenth (1/10) that of the Sun. (c) Discuss the result: e.g. are the more massive stars also the most dense?

Im a bit confused. So do i just calculate log m and log r? then what about the same density and 1/10 of sun?

Explanation / Answer

You need to calculate both log m as well as log r.

since it is asked to plot on log-log scale.

also for the same density use data as such

for 1/10 density, multiply each mass by 1/10 and then plot
