Question

the terminal voltage of a battery is 5.0 V when 0.55 A current is drawn from it, whereas the terminal voltage is 5.7 V when a current of 0.180 A is drawn. 1. What is the emf of the battery? 2. What is the internal resistance of the battery? the terminal voltage of a battery is 5.0 V when 0.55 A current is drawn from it, whereas the terminal voltage is 5.7 V when a current of 0.180 A is drawn. 1. What is the emf of the battery? 2. What is the internal resistance of the battery? 1. What is the emf of the battery? 2. What is the internal resistance of the battery?

Explanation / Answer

terminal voltage

V = E - I r

if V = 5 V I = 0.55 A

5 V = E - 0.55 r ..... (1)

5.7 V = E - 0.18 r ..... (2)

substract 2 - 1

o.7 = (0.55 - 0.18 ) r

internal resistance

r = 2.1875 ohm

emf E = 5.7 + ( 2.1875 ) ( 0.18 ) = 6.09 V
