1. A friend tells you that she has tender, swollen "glands" along the left side of the front of her neck. You notice that she has a bandage on her left check that is not fully hiding a large infected cut there. Exactly what are her swollen "glands," and how did they become swollen? What type of bacteria could have caused this problem? What other types of infectious agents could have caused swollen cervical lymph nodes? These swollen glands are her cervical lymph nodes and they most likely got infected from an infection or inflammation that she has. The reason why this cervical lymph nodes are some of the first forms of defense that bacteria is up against within the body, The first lymph nodes in a series of lymph nodes, called the sentinel lymph node, are often the ones that become the most infected because they receive the most bacteria. Bacteria that usually causes the lymph nodes to swell would be something like streptococcus or staphylococcus (Medline Plus). Other infectious things that can cause the lymph nodes to swell are things like cuts, scratches, or even

Explanation / Answer

They are cervical lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are spread all over the body. They are too numerous to name, and often indicated with the region they are present. The lymph nodes present in the neck are called cervical lymph nodes. When any antigen enters the body, they are transported to the regional lymph nodes where immune reaction to that antigen is initiated. The GI tract is directly exposed to external environment. The food we ingest generally carry several pathogens along with it. The cervical lympho nodes form the first line of defense against those pathogens.

The swelling occurs when there is an inflammatory response or innate immune response against a pathogen brought the lymph nodes. MOst common bacteria that cause cervical lymph node swelling are Staphylococcus, Strepcococcus. Apart form these, cancers, immunodeficienies, and certain other chronic diseases also casue pain and sweling of the lymph nodes.
