Question

ok, my teacher showed me how to do this in class but i still don'treally get it. He told me for part A to use the V=Vo+atformula and for B you have to subtract the distances, (the distanceof the helicopter and the distance of the small mailbag.
The distance of the mailbag is Y=Vot-1/2gt2 and thedistance of the helicopter is Y=Vavt not sure if its right. Please help.

A small mailbag is released from a helicopter that is descendingsteadily at 1.00 m/s.
(a) After 5.00 s, what isthe speed of the mailbag?
1 m/s
(b) How far is it below the helicopter?
2 m
(c) What are your answers to parts (a) and (b) if the helicopter isrising steadily at 1.00 m/s?
3 m/s
4 m

Thank you

Explanation / Answer

(a). Initial velocity u = 1 m / s fromthe relation v = u + gt velocity after 5 s is   v = 1 + ( 9.8 *5 )                                    = 50 m / s (b). Distance moved S = ut + ( 1/ 2) gt ^ 2                                    = ( 1 * 5 ) + ( 4.9 * 5 ^ 2 )                                   = 127.5 m (c). Initial velocity u = 1 m / s So, velcoity after 5 s is v = u - gt                                        = 1 - ( 9.8 * 5 )                                        = -48 m / s distance moved S ' = ut -( 1/ 2) gt^ 2                              = 5 - ( 4.9 * 5 ^ 2 )                              = -117.5 m
