a "common sense" approach is the easiest way to solve thisproblem: after 1 hour, boat A (50 km/hr) is at the other side of the lake,and boat B (25 km/hr) is only halfway across. after 2 hours, boat A(50 km/hr) has finished the race. boat B(still at 25 km/hr) has just reached the other end. so boat A won by 50 km. boat B never reached 75 km/hr until after the race is over, so itis irrelevant to solving the problem.
