Assuming that the diameter of your eardrum is 1 cm (see Exercise24) what is the sound power received by the eardrum at tehthreshold of (a) hearing and (b) pain?
*the info that #24 gives is that the frequency limit of youraudible region is between 16,000 Hz and 20,000 Hz
The correct answer is: a) 8 x 10-17 W, b) 8 x10-5 W
Explanation / Answer
the frequency limit of audible hearing is usually considered to bebetween 20 and 20000Hz. This has nothing to do with thisproblem though: the threshold of hearing is 0 dB, or 10-12W/m2 the area of your ear drum is*.0052=7.85*10-5m2 so the power will be10-12*7.85*10-5=7.85*10-17W the threshold of pain is 120 dB, or 1 W/m2 so the power will be1*7.85*10-5=7.85*10-5W
