Question

A proton and an electron are moving due east in a constant electricfield that also points due east. (a) Does each experience anelectric force of the same magnitude and direction? (b) What is thedirection of the proton's acceleration, and what is the directionof the electron's acceleration? (c) IS the magnitude of theproton's acceleration greater than, less than, or the same as thatof the electron's acceleration? Explain your answers.
The electric field points due east and has a magnitude or8.0X104 N/C. Determine the magnitude of theacceleration of the proton and electron. Check that youanswers are consistent with part (c) of the Concept Question.

Explanation / Answer

Given :           Aproton and an electron are moving due east in a constant electricfield that also points due east. (a)           Froce F   = E q          Fro proton :                       F   =   8.0 x104 N/C * 1.602 x 10-19   C                             = 12.806 x 10-15   N For electron :                      F   =   8.0 x104 N/C * -1.602 x 10-19   C                             = -12.806 x 10-15   N Hence the magnitude is same , but in differentdirections. (b)          As theelectron is negatively charged paticle , Electric field actsdownwards.          and for theproton electric field is in upward direction. (c)          Acceleration   (a)   = F / m         For proton :                       a   = 12.806 x 10-15   N / 1.672 x10-27   kg          Forelectron :                      a   = 12.806 x 10-15   N / 9.11 x10-31   kg Hence acceleration of electon is > acceleration ofproton Hope this helps u!                             = -12.806 x 10-15   N Hence the magnitude is same , but in differentdirections.
