Question

Hi, can you please help me solve the following problem? It's notfrom a textbook, but we use the Giancoli Textbook as a resource.Thank you!

a) Suppose a ping-pong ball and a bowling ball are rolling towardyou, and that both have the same momentum. On each you exert thesame constant force until it stops. How do the time intervals thatwere needed to stop them compare?

1. It took less time to stop the ping-pong ball.
2. Both took the same time.
3. It took more time to stop the ping-pong ball.

b) How do the distances needed to stop them compare?

1. It took a shorter distance to stop the ping-pong ball.
2. Both took the same distance.
3. It took a longer distance to stop the ping-pong ball.

Explanation / Answer

a) 2. Both took the same time. Because force equals the time rate of change ofmomentum, the two balls lose momentum at the same rate. If bothballs initially have the same momentum, it takes the same amount oftime to stop them. b) 3. It took a longer distance to stopthe ping-pong ball. Because the momenta of the two balls are equal, the ball with thelarger velocity has the larger kinetic energy. Being that theping-pong ball has a smaller inertial mass, it must therefore havethe larger kinetic energy. This means more work must be done on theping-pong ball than on the bowling ball. Because work is theproduct of force and displacement, the distance to stop theping-pong ball is greater.
