Question
A picture is given showing three windows. The first windowis labeled 3, followed by 2 and window 1 is ontop. The question reads: In figure 2-20 a cream tangerineis thrown directly upward past three evenly spaced windows of equalheights. Rank the windows according to the change delta v inspeed of the cream of tangerine during the passage, greatestfirst.
The answer in order of greatest change to least change is 1,2,3
I am a beginning student and am very confused. Idon’t understand the question. If you examine the lastsentence of the question it says, “Rank the windows accordingto the change delta v in speed…” In the question, delta v appears between the words “change” and“in speed” making it seem like speed and velocity aresynonyms. From the chapter, I think that speed is not the samething as velocity because different formulas are given for each. Isthe question asking for the change in speed or the change invelocity?
Another point of confusion for me is whether the quantity isinstantaneous or average. In other words, which of thefollowing is the question asking for: instantaneous speed, averagespeed, instantaneous velocity, or average velocity?
Explanation / Answer
“Rank the windows according to the change delta v inspeed…” In the question, delta v appears betweenthe words “change” and “in speed” making itseem like speed and velocity are synonyms. From the chapter, Ithink that speed is not the same thing as velocity becausedifferent formulas are given for each. Is the question asking forthe change in speed or the change in velocity?
as you said speed and velocity are different .magnitude ofvelocity =speed.
hence you can take either of them correct because in the upwardas far as direction remains same change in velocity=change inspeed.
Another point of confusion for me is whether the quantity isinstantaneous or average. In other words, which of thefollowing is the question asking for: instantaneous speed, averagespeed, instantaneous velocity, or average velocity?
change in speed= speed at the end of the first window-speed atthe end of the starting of the window.
