Question
I have a question about how the final answer wasachieved. The procedure has been posted, but I did notanticipate it. #58, chapter 1 In purchasing food for a political rally, you erroneouslyordered Pacific oysters (which come 8-12 US pint) instead ofAtlantic oysters (which come 26 - 38 per US pint.) The filledoyster container shipped to you has the interior measure of 1.0 m x12 cm x 20 cm and the us pint is = to 0.4732 L. By how manyoysters are you short? The step by step solution is already posted, but here's what Ididn't follow. There is a larger number of atlantic oysters,1927.3 and a smaller number, 1318.69. There is also a largernumber, 608.6 and a smaller number, 405.75 for pacificoysters. When I did my calculation, I subtracted the smallnumber from atlantic oysters from the small number of pacificoysters. 1318.7 - 405.8 to come up with an incorrectanswer. In physics, does subtracting the bigger number of one rangewith the smaller number of the other come up with a more accurateanswer? Should I always do this? Since there is a range for the number of each kind of oyster youhave, there will also be a range of how many oysters you areshort. The minimum number of oysters you are missing is the smaller numberof atlantic oysters minus the larger number of pacific oysters. The maximum number of oysters you are short is the larger number ofatlantic oysters minus the smaller number of pacific oysters. Since we're looking for the worst case, you should subtract thesmaller number of pacific oysters, 405.8, from the higher number ofatlantic oysters, 1927.3. = 1927.3-405.8=1521.5
