Question

Two electrons are located in a region of space where themagnetic field is zero. Electron A is at rest; andelectron B is moving westward with a constantvelocity. A non-zero magnetic field directed eastward is thenapplied to the region. In what direction, if any, will eachelectron be moving after the field is applied?
               electronA                              electron B

A)           atrest                                    westward

B)          northward                               eastward

C)           atrest                                     eastward

D)          southward                             downward (toward earth)

E)          upward (away from earth)      westward

a. E
b. A
c. C
d. D
e. B Two electrons are located in a region of space where themagnetic field is zero. Electron A is at rest; andelectron B is moving westward with a constantvelocity. D)          southward                             downward (toward earth)

E)          upward (away from earth)      westward
E A C D B

Explanation / Answer

The force on a charge Q by a magnetic field B is F = Q v x B   >>> underbar means avector quantity. So if the charge is at rest, F = 0. So, electron A remains at rest. Also, for electron B, velocity and B are anti-parallel. so thevector product is zero. So electron B continues to move westward. hope this helps!
