Question

The following data were collected for a bioassay using the Ames test. Three compounds were tested (two different hydroxy-nitropyrenes and nitropyrene) along with a control. Each was testing in the absence (-S9) and presence (+S9) of rat liver microsomes. Data are presented as revertants/40 nmol compound. Identify each compound as strongly, weakly, or non-mutagenic, for both the +S9 and -S9 treatments. Offer an explanation for any differences between the +S9 AND -S9 treatments.

Explanation / Answer

Data presented as revertants/40 nmol compound as strongly, weakly, or non-mutagenic, for both the +S9 and -S9 treatments.

Differences between the +S9 AND -S9 treatments.

Mutation were 1.020.82 net revertant per microgram (rev/g) of humic acid extracted from the coal containing high arsenic in Guizhou without rat liver homogenate (-S 9),

and 1.531.12 rev/g of that with rat liver homogenate (+S 9), with an obvious dose response relationship

Compound -S9 -S9 mutagenicity +S9 +S9 mutagenicity 1-OH-2NP 28 Non-miutagenic 46 Non-miutagenic 1-OH-5NP 73 Weakly 255 Strongly 1-NP 1605 Non-miutagenic 165 Strongly Control 22 Strongly 29 Weakly
