Question

Hi, can you please help me solve the following problem? Thisproblem relates to Sect. 1-7 (Chapter 1, Sect. 7, pp. 12-14) inGiancoli textbook (6th edition), but is motivated by anactual experience of an actual person.

Problem 5. You pull into a parking lot at a mall, circle around, and find no empty spots. You idle at
one end of the lot; you are positioned so that you are able to see(and quickly sneak into, should any free up) about twenty parkingspaces. Estimate how long you’ll have to wait before one ofthose twenty spaces frees up. Make reasonable simplifyingassumptions, the main one being that people arrive and leave atregularly spaced intervals; you’ll also need a guestimateabout how long people shop—let’s say two hours, onaverage.

Explanation / Answer

These are cool problems, assumptions: People shop approx 2hrs=120min The spots were filled at random intervals over one 2 hour period(which comes from the assumption that people shop for 2 hours) If the person can see 20 spots it falls from the last assumptionthat the longest interval that you will have to wait will be120min/20=6minutes. So the wait time will be on the order of5-10minutes Of course this answer assumes that it is the middle of the day (ifthe mall has just opened then it isn't reasonable to assume thatthe spots were filled at random intervals over a 2 hour period, etc)
