Question
You are to do an experiment. Use some brass weights to applyknown forces to a spring, and measure the extension of the springfor each weight applied. From this data, plot a force versusextension graph for your spring. a) Which quantities(force and extension) should be on thehorizontal and vertical axes? Explain. b) According to Hooke's Law, your graph-vs-extension graphshould be a linear relation between force F and extension x:in other words, the graph should be a straight line of gradient -k.Explain why this is so by consideringthe similarity between the Hooke's Law equation F=-kx and the basiclinear equation y=mx+c. c) How would you use your experiment results to find avalue for k? Thanks. You are to do an experiment. Use some brass weights to applyknown forces to a spring, and measure the extension of the springfor each weight applied. . Use some brass weights to apply known forces to a spring, and measure the extension of the spring for each weight applied. From this data, plot a force versus extension graph for yourspring. a) Which quantities(force and extension) should be on thehorizontal and vertical axes? Explain.while plotting a graph the rule is all independants should beplotted on X axis and dependants should be on Y axis.
in the pair force and extension force is a measure for stressand should be plotted on y axis and extension which should beplotted on X axis.
b) According to Hooke's Law, your graph-vs-extension graphshould be a linear relation between force F and extension x:in other words, the graph should be a straight line of gradient -k.Explain why this is so by consideringthe similarity between the Hooke's Law equation F=-kx and the basiclinear equation y=mx+c.
y=mx+c and y=mx are equivalent .if there is y intercept +c will bethere if there is no intercept y=mx
will be the equation..
c) How would you use your experiment results to find avalue for k?
by finding out the slope that difference in y coordinates/difference in X coordinates we can find out the slope
Thanks.
