Question

Two movers have to lift a refrigerator onto a truck, as shown inFigure 5-14. One of the movers wants to lift the refrigeratorvertically, but the other mover wants to lift the refrigeratorvertically, but the other mover wants to roll it up in a ramp byapplying a force parallel to the ramp. Assume the height of thetruck is 1.5,, the lenght of the ramp is 5.0m, and the weight ofthe refrigerator is 1200N. Calculate the force and total forcerequired in each case. Which method is easier? THANKS, (WILL RATE ASAP) LIFESAVERS for all the part of the question VERY HELFUL for half

Explanation / Answer

So first method is lift it vertically. Here the only workyou're doing is lifting it vertically. Moving it horizontally doesnot count as work because you aren't applying a horizontal force tothe refridgerator. Work = Force * Distance Here the force is equal to the weight of the refrigerator (F =mg) The distane is 1.5 meters, this is how high they must lift(minimal). W = mgy [Note this is the same thing as potentialenergy...] W = 1200(1.5)= 1800 J     Two workers, so 900 J apieceof work ---- Second method push it along the ramp. Here you need to draw apicture. So again work you do here = force * distance. Distance obviously is 5 meters, but what is the force?

Break it up to vertical and horizontal components. Vertically you must provide a force equal to the VERTICALcomponent of the weight of the refrigerator. This means you have touse trig to find the angle of the incline... Horizontally is just pushing the weight the horizontaldistance (1200 N) so use pythagoreon thereom to find the horizontaldistance. 5^2 = 1.5^2 + X^2    where X is yourdistance. Net work = Vertical Work + Horizontal Work. Hopefully this helps get you started, I would do it all but ambusy working on my physics If not let me know and I'll get back to you If not let me know and I'll get back to you
