Question
I have been working on this question for two hours and cannot findthe right answer! Please help me!A block of mass m1 = 4.80 kg sits on top of a second block of massm2 = 14.4 kg, which inturn is on a horizontal table. The coefficients of friction betweenthe two blocks are µs = 0.300 andµk = 0.100. The coefficients of frictionbetween the lower block and the rough table areµs = 0.500 andµk = 0.400. You apply a constanthorizontal force to the lower block, just large enough to make thisblock start sliding out from between the upper block and thetable.
Determine the magnitude of each force on each block at the instantwhen you have started pushing but motion has not yet started. Inparticular, what force must you apply?
What is the acceleration of each block?
Explanation / Answer
ok I finally got how to get the first part: force needed to pushthe box one out from under the second, F= m1gs1 +(m1+m2)gus2 = 4.8*9.8*0.3 +(4.8+14.4)*9.8*0.5 = 108.192N However, now I do not know how to find the accelerations. Ido know though that to find the acceleration on m2 you need to usethe force calculated above- 108.192N Can someone please help me!!!!
